-Vertical Lips I Don't Want Your Love:
-Recorded 16/03/16 Fife College Studios
-Recording which took place in the studios over the course of 6 hours where, working with a partner, we recorded a band playing a song with over 12 tracks.
-We set up the whole studio ready for the band to record 2 guitars, a full drum kit, and vocals and overdub the bass. Using screens to separate the drums in order to give them a better acoustic sense and to control spill on other mics. (Acoustics-Room Acoustics)
-Worked as a team with one of us setting up mics and the other setting up the protools session, followed by a signal and hearback check.
-Had a number of problems with signals from mics, and broken DAWS, but with some overdubbing and extra mixing it was completed regardless.
Recording Projects
An audio engineer works on the recording, manipulation using equalization and electronic effects, mixing, reproduction, and reinforcement of sound.

-AKG SE 300 B (CK93) hyper cardiod mic, good for use with line level instruments such as acoustic guitar or vocals, similar to the SHURE SM58 used in the studio multitrack recording.
-Jed: Thinking out Loud cover Ed Sheeran

-Summer Blues Original song by Jed

Used ORTF stereo mic technique with two Oktava MK-012s to record along with a Tascam portable recorder (stereo mic techniques).
Jed Recordings
Location recording of Jed playing guitar and singing in a medium sized acoustic space in his home. Used ORTF microphone technique on two Oktava MK-012s to ensure a stereo picture (hypercardioid polar pattern).
Jed Location Recording Planning Document
Track three was recorded in around 3 takes onto the stereo microphones, where I used headphones to monitor the signal and made sure everything was working properly.
Recorded the first track using the stereo mic set up, took a number of takes due to instrument mistakes, each take being checked and saved through my laptop as a backup for the recorder.
The second track was accidentally recorded with the Tascam built in microphone due to the Tascam resetting and forgetting to change the signal path back to the external mics. This track still sounded good and was done on the first take, and had a different feel to the other tracks making it stand out and was good practice to use different mediums for the recording.
Location Recordings
-Project 1 is a challenge to record a song, either a cover or an original in a group within a timeframe of 4 weeks.
-We composed and recorded a guitar sample for mixing, record keyboard samples and midi data to go with the guitar sample.
-Using leftover drum samples from a previous recording session we created a drum track and added in virtual bass, virtual synth and other virtual percussion.
-We only required a guitar, and a Tascam to record the guitar sample as a way to save time and allow us to start mixing as soon as possible without being caught up in studio bookings.
-The recording of samples was finished for the end of the 1st week, planning documentation was completed for the end of the 2nd week and mixing was to continue throughout the course of the 4 weeks.
-Project 2 involved recording a song (original or cover) in a group that shows the features and writing styles of a specific music genre.
-In a group of 4 we browsed lists of different world genres and chose to focus on Indie Folk. -We then arranged to meet an artist, also at the college, in the studio, to record a slightly different version of his tracks to suit our genre.
-The first and second weeks were spent thoroughly researching the genre such as; popular artists, producers, writing styles, influences and when/where it originated from.
Indie folk music generally came around in the 1990’s with artists in the Indie Rock genre experimenting with contemporary folk and classic country styles. Many of the artists are large bands such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros or solo artists like Laura Marling.
-Indie folk songs are usually focused on an acoustic guitar and vocals but can feature many other instruments such as the banjo and African drums.
-The recordings tend to feature a lot of room sound or reverb on the vocals well harmonized.
-Record labels such as Hush and Dead Ocean work with indie folk artists like Death cab for Cutie and The Tallest Man on Earth.
